History

With the assignment of the Scarboro Foreign Mission (SFM) a Canadian Missionaries in the Pacific towns of Southern Leyte cooperative movement began in the area. Rev. Fr. Frederick Wakeham, a Canadian priest who was assigned in the municipality of Hinunangan organized the STS. PETER AND PAUL CREDIT UNION, its name derived in honor of the town's patron saints.

The depressing situation of the locality deeply bothered him for quite a long time for he had observed that most of the inhabitant was poor. Thus, apart from the renovation of the old church, the upliftment of the economic conditions of the people was included in his pastoral mission. He thought of forming a cooperative.

Considering that their mission was for the good of the church and the inhabitant in the locality, he started to renovate the very old church and contemplating its major improvements. It lasted for a couple of years.

Then, he started imparting cooperative lesson to prospective members through training's and seminars believing that the best foundation of the credit union was based on proper, thorough and continuous education. Pre-membership seminars were conducted for seven (7) Saturdays before one could become or would be admitted as member. The organizer sees to it that the requirements and pre-requites were religiously learned and followed so that each member would become an asset and not a liability to the organization.

STS. PETER AND PAUL PARISH CREDIT UNION was formally organized on May 14, 1968 by the 36 founding members of which 15 of them become the incorporators. It was registered in the Bureau of Cooperatives and re-registered to the Securities and Exchange Commissions (SEC) with registration No. FF-102-RR.

The founding members were only able to contribute but coconuts and processed into copra. The proceeds, which, totaled to Php 837.50 become the coop's initial capital.

The coop was once again re-registered on October 15, 1973 to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) changing its name to Sts. Peter and Paul Credit Cooperative. In its infancy, it had no office of its own. Its office and business operation was temporarily in the old parish convent.

In November 1982, its office and business operation was transferred in the Poblacion area in front of the public market. The coop rented the house of Atty. Jesus C. Maroket. It is said that location is a major factor to the success of the business.

Sometimes in the year 1978-79, the cooperative suffered management problem and it's resulted to liquidity problem due to the absence of check and balance because, the Managers was also the Treasurer. This financial problem created the loss of confidence of the management and, massive withdrawal of deposits happened likewise, the membership was also affected. However, the officer with deep concern of the coop managed to stay on and series of ownership meeting were conducted to counter the crisis.

This was where the officers decided to look for replacement and with the • recommendation from VICTO, Mr. Conrad() Blanco took over as Manager and Mrs. Luisa Ando was promoted to Treasurer, he, being a cooperative specialist managed to turn the business operation back to normal.

With the resignation of Mr. Conrado Blanco, Mr. Remy Matunog who was then the technical assistance was promoted to Manager and during his tenure, the construction of the coop building began however, the construction took a longer time due to limited resources. The dream of the officers and the members to have its own building turn to reality when finally, its office and business operation was transferred.

We cannot just forget the officers and' management staff whom during their time this edifice was constructed with complacency to commemorate for;

Expansion of the membership is the primarily concern thus, continuous education thru pre-membership seminars were conducted and had reached to far-flung mountain barangays of the municipality.

It was during her term that the cooperative had attained its first recognition from the Land Bank of the Philippines, being number one in the province and in the regional level. The cooperative was awarded with one (1) unit karaoke.
